Black economy crackdown targets cleaners

Couriers and cleaners are the targets of a new government crackdown on the black economy.

A government crackdown on the black economy will target couriers and cleaners as industries that Revenue Minister Kelly O'Dwyer says are high risk for not reporting their full income to the tax office.

New legislation would make it compulsory for the courier and cleaning industries to report annual payments to contractors to the Australian Taxation Office and create an offence for selling or using tolls that remove or modify transactions from record keeping systems.

"Participation in the black economy undermines community trust in the tax system, creates an uneven playing field among competing businesses and results in the loss of government revenue," Ms O'Dwyer said on Wednesday.
