A deliberately lit bushfire is potentially threatening lives and homes near an Aboriginal community in Western Australia's north.

A watch and act alert was issued for the Yandeyarra Community south of Port Hedland on Wednesday afternoon, with authorities warning the blaze was moving fast, out-of-control and unpredictable.

"You need to leave or get ready to actively defend," the Department of Fire and Emergency Services said.
