Bushfire threatens lives, homes in WA

A fast-moving and out-of-control bushfire is threatening lives and homes east of Perth in the Shire of York, with residents warned they may have to flee.

An emergency bushfire warning has been broadened as a fast-moving, out-of-control blaze continues to threaten lives and homes east of Perth.

The emergency warning is in place for parts of St Ronans and Daliak in the Shire of York, after the blaze began near the intersection of the Great Southern Highway about 3pm on Thursday.

The Department of Emergency Services has warned residents there is a possible risk to lives and homes, so people in the area need to leave or prepare to actively defend their property.

"Do not wait and see, leaving at the last minute is deadly," the warning reads.

A watch-and-act warning is in place for a nearby area bounded by North Road, Eleventh Road, west of Ulster Road, Great Southern Highway out to the intersection with Trews Road and Mokine Road at York.

"If you are not prepared or you plan to leave, leave now if the way is clear," it reads.

"If you are well prepared and plan to actively defend your home, make final preparations now."

Firefighters are actively fighting the blaze, which authorities describe as "out-of-control and unpredictable."

Aerial support has been sent to assist firefighters on the ground.
