Commonwealth Bank has split the responsibilities of its general counsel and corporate affairs role and hired Priscilla Sims Brown to the new position of marketing and corporate affairs executive.

Chief executive Matt Comyn says the retirement of incumbent Anna Lenahan had given the bank the opportunity to review the role.

"With our focus on earning trust and restoring the reputation of the Commonwealth Bank, we have decided to separate the role," Mr Comyn said on Friday.

"In addition to a group General Counsel and Governance, we are creating the new role of Group Executive Marketing and Corporate Affairs to allow for greater focus on how we engage with our customers, stakeholders and the broader community."

A former senior vice president and chief marketing officer at AXA Financial in the US, Ms Brown is currently chief executive of American digital healthcare startup Emerge.me.

"Priscilla is a seasoned senior executive with extensive investment management, insurance, and financial services experience," Mr Comyn said.

"In addition to her marketing and corporate affairs expertise, Priscilla has an impressive track record of driving ambitious growth and customer transformation agendas, particularly during challenging periods."

Deputy chief executive David Cohen will take in the general counsel responsibilities on an interim basis until a permanent appointment is made "soon".

At 1041 AEST, CBA shares were 1.08 per cent higher at $83.90, making them the best performing of the big four banks.
