He may have fallen just shy of direct entry but rapidly improving Australian Alex de Minaur has still made the Wimbledon main draw courtesy of a wildcard.

The All England Club confirmed de Minaur would be one of eight men's singles wildcards for the July 2-15 grand slam.

De Minaur is currently well inside the grand slam cutoff for entry at No.78 but was outside the top 100 when the rankings were taken into consideration last month.

The 19-year-old's rapid rise in recent times was helped by winning the grass court challenger event in Nottingham last Sunday.

Meanwhile Australia's retired former world No.1 Lleyton Hewitt has received a wildcard into the doubles.

The 2002 singles champion will team with another Australian, 25 year-old Alex Bolt.
