The former Victorian head of the Comancheros bikie gang, Amad "Jay" Malkoun, has been seriously injured in a car bomb in Athens.
Greek media sources say the blast occurred when the 56-year-old tried to start his Mercedes after leaving a gym.
He was rushed to hospital on Friday with serious but non-life threatening injuries.
According to the Ekathimerini news source, it is unsure whether the explosive was detonated by the ignition or done remotely.
Malkou, a convicted drug trafficker, fled Australia several years ago and has lived in Greece for two years with his family.
It is believed the attack may have been carried out by an organised crime gang, a security official told Spanish news agency EFE.
Extensive burns
Malkoun had just left a gym and got into the car, which was parked in an open-air parking lot in Glyfada, an upmarket residential suburb on the outskirts of Athens.
When the bomb went off, two passers-by rescued Malkoun from the car, which was engulfed in flames.
He was taken to a nearby hospital with what is believed to be extensive burns.
A police spokesperson said he was due to undergo surgery but added that health officials did not think his life was in danger.
Local media reported investigators found residue of an explosive device that had been placed under the vehicle, raising suspicions that it was a targeted attack.
When the bomb exploded, it sent fragments of the vehicle flying across a 150-metre radius.
Firefighters said when they arrived on the scene, a further four vehicles were on fire.
Witnesses were reported as saying that they heard multiple explosions, according to domestic media.
Police cordoned off traffic in the vicinity of the explosion in order to facilitate the investigation.
