The young son of a volunteer killed fighting NSW bushfires stood up during an emotional funeral service to receive medals for his father's bravery and service.

Firefighter Geoffrey Keaton, 32, died when his fire truck rolled while battling the large Green Wattle Creek blaze near the town of Buxton.

Mr Keaton was remembered at a funeral at Pinegrove Memorial Park in Minchinbury on Thursday morning.

NSW Rural Fire Service Commissioner Shane Fitzsimmons honoured Mr Keaton by posthumously awarding him commendations for bravery and service, which he pinned on the firefighter's 19-month-old son Harvey.

The bravery commendation recognises "courage under hazardous circumstances", while the service honour recognises "outstanding actions".

A mug sitting on top of Mr Keaton's coffin read, "Daddy, I love you to the moon and back".

An RFS guard of honour was formed, with members wearing their service uniforms and tunics with medals.

Mr Keaton's fiancee Jess Hayes and Harvey were earlier in a long procession of fire trucks driven to the service in tribute to Mr Keaton.

Volunteer Andrew O'Dwyer, 36, was killed in the same crash and will be remembered at a separate service next week.

Mr Keaton joined the RFS in 2006 and was the deputy captain of the 68-strong Horsley Park Rural Fire Brigade.

Prime Minister Scott Morrison and wife Jenny were among those paying tribute to Mr Keaton.

"It was important to be able to honour his great sacrifice and his tremendous service," Mr Morrison told reporters on Thursday following the funeral.

"Sadly, we will be attending two more of these services in the not-too-distant future.

"From all the nation to Jess and the family, we extend our deepest sympathies and for those who will be gathering together for similar services in the near future, we extend that to them also."

Firefighter and expectant father Sam McPaul was killed fighting fires on the Victoria-NSW border on Monday evening.

Mr McPaul was the third NSW volunteer killed this fire season.

Grief-stricken members of the Horsley Park brigade have mourned Mr Keaton while simultaneously battling to contain bushfires in the region.

The brigade has in recent days been working to put in containment lines before the return of dangerous bushfire weather on Saturday.
