Stefanovic was one of six journalists announced in the media section for the Honour LGBTI Community Awards – but the circumstances behind his nomination have caused a stir on social media.

The Gold Logie winner faced backlash in July after saying the word “tranny” during a live cross on Channel Nine’s Today Show.

The following day, he offered a three-minute apology for using the word, saying: "As we all know I can be a complete tool, yesterday I was worse, I was an ignorant tool.”
The apology was highlighted as a reason for Stefanovic's nomination on the award website, which called his comments “unfortunate”, and the apology as “groundbreaking” and “earnest”.

Stefanovic’s 60 Minutes story on young transgender people was also mentioned in the nomination.

Several people took to social media to criticise the nomination.
Patrick Abboud and Mark Whittaker from SBS were nominated for the same award.

Abboud presented the national broadcast of the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras, while Whittaker was mentioned for investigations into gay-hate crimes in Australia.

They will be up against News Limited's Shannon Molloy, and the ABC's Janine Cohen and Monique Schafter.
