Newcastle have fined centre Tautau Moga $60,000 following his involvement in an assault last year.

Moga had been placed on a six-month conditional release order for slapping a taxi driver after a race meet in Newcastle on December 26 last year.

No conviction was recorded.

Following Thursday's court verdict, the Newcastle Knights disciplinary committee met and decided to act on their new behavioural policy by fining Moga.

"Moga has been fined $60,000 with $30,000 suspended, subject to good behaviour," a Newcastle statement said.

"Moga has already served a two-game suspension.

"Moga has shown genuine remorse for his actions and will be very active in the club's community programs."

The 25 year-old had accepted the accusations levelled against him, which included his slapping of a taxi driver twice while verbally abusing the man while intoxicated.
