Lay day at Margaret River Pro surf comp

The World Surf League is predicting ideal conditions for the Margaret River Pro on the weekend after calling a lay day on Thursday.

The Margaret River Pro is destined for a Sunday conclusion after being called off until Friday at the earliest as the elite surfing event's organisers await ideal conditions.

Main Break's 1-1.5m surf on Thursday was deemed contestable, but the World Surf League is expecting a favourable change on the Western Australian south coast in coming days.

"We know the wind is just around the corner and going to blow onshore quite hard, so we are calling the event off for today," WSL deputy commissioner Renato Hickel said.

"We are going to reassess tomorrow. We have a big chance to run the women's event tomorrow, and if not then, on Saturday.

"There is still a massive swell for Sunday, so we are most likely going to do the men's quarter-finals then and finish the event."

At least one Australian woman will make it through to the final after six-time world champion Stephanie Gilmore, Tyler Wright and Sally Fitzgibbons all made it through to the semis.

In the men's draw, Owen Wright and Jack Freestone are the only Australians left, and they'll battle it out in the quarter-finals when competition resumes.

Organisers will reconvene at 8.45am AEST on Friday to assess conditions.

MEN'S QUARTER-FINALS:

QF 1: Owen Wright (AUS) vs Jack Freestone (AUS)

QF 2: John John Florence (HAW) vs Michel Bourez (PYF)

QF 3: Adriano de Souza (BRA) vs Filipe Toledo (BRA)

QF 4: Kolohe Andino (USA) vs Jordy Smith (ZAF)

WOMEN'S SEMI-FINALS:

SF 1: Sage Erickson (USA) vs Tyler Wright (AUS)

SF 2: Stephanie Gilmore (AUS) vs Sally Fitzgibbons (AUS)
