Relive the glory with some highlights

You can catch up on the Socceroos' famous win against Türkiye at their World Cup opener today, including Irankunda and Metcalfe's goals and other key highlights, here:

'Dream come true' for Irankunda

Australia's youngest-ever World Cup goal scorer, Nestory Irankunda, said it's a "dream come true".

"We've got the win now, we worked extra hard, we fought till the end, and it's just an exciting moment," he said.

"You gotta thank the staff, you gotta thank the nation. You know, they all had the belief in me to do so well, and you know, I felt like today getting that goal, you know, it was amazing," he said.

Irankunda's trademark backflip celebration was notably absent, instead going for the corner flag punch, which he said was in tribute to his hero, Tim Cahill.

"Timmy Cahill was my biggest inspiration when it comes to football, him and Lionel Messi," he said.

"I just thought if I scored, I'll do the same as him."

Irankunda was awarded player of the match for his efforts.

'Proud to be here': Popovic

Popovic, as you would expect, is over the moon.

"Proud," he said.

"Proud to be here as head coach, to experience this.

"Put a smile on these people's faces that have travelled so far to support us. And just so happy for a wonderful young group of men."

He said it was a big call to have Patrick Beach replace Mat Ryan in goals, but explained his decision.

"It's something that, you know we've always seen (his quality) and I've got a lot of belief in the young man.

"He stood up today so very happy for him."

Australia silenced its doubters: Kewell

Harry Kewell has summed it up well about Australia's doubters, which included Türkiye captain Hakan Calhanoglu, who said his "more talented" team would "dominate" Australia.

"One thing in football is when people talk, the best way to silence them is on the pitch, and I think tonight Australia silenced a lot of people," Kewell said on SBS's post-game coverage.

Popovic vindicated after historic win

Türkiye threw everything at the Socceroos but were unable to break down Australia's defence, which withstood relentless pressure.

After the final whistle sounded, Tony Popovic was mobbed by the coaching staff. He has been vindicated for his call to replace goalkeeper and captain Mat Ryan with Patrick Beach, who had an outstanding night with eight saves.

Türkiye dominated possession, 59 per cent to 30 per cent (with 11 per cent contested) and 30 shots on goal, compared to Australia's nine shots.

The win marks the first World Cup opening match victory for Australia since 2006, when the Socceroos took down Japan.

Australia walk away with three points and a clean sheet before they take on the USA on Saturday, 20 June.
