‘We can't lock ourselves up in a basement like Joe does’
Mr Trump says Americans are learning to live with the virus.

“We are learning to live with it, we have no choice, we can't lock ourselves up in a basement like Joe does. He has the ability to lock himself up,” he says.

Joe Biden looks directly at the camera when he responds, addressing the public.

“You folks will have an empty chair at the kitchen table this morning. That man or wife going to bed at night reaching over to try to touch their partner out of habit, is gone. Learning to live with it? Come on. We're dying with it."

Donald Trump, without evidence, says a vaccine will be ready 'within weeks'
First question on the pandemic
Mr Trump is asked how he would continue to lead the country out of the pandemic.

He’s given two minutes uninterrupted time.

He says it’s a worldwide problem and that he’s been congratulated by many world leaders for his approach.

Mr Trump repeats his claim that he’s immune from the virus.

Joe Biden says anyone who is responsible for the deaths of over 200,000 Americans is not fit for presidency.

“I will take care of this, I will end this, I will make sure that we have a plan.”

The Trump team arrives
Donald Trump has arrived at the venue - and so have his team, masked up.

Joe's ready
While we’re waiting for the debate to start
Here’s a chance to brush up on the news today.

  • My colleague Gavin Fernando has this great feature on what will happen if Donald Trump loses the election but refuses to concede
  • Mr Trump has aired unbroadcast footage of his interview with 60 Minutes which he cut short after complaining of bias
  • A Dutch ‘ethical’ hacker says he managed to access Donald Trump’s Twitter account with a simple password. Find out what it was here.
  • The Senate Judiciary Committee has pushed through US President Donald Trump's conservative pick for the Supreme Court, Amy Coney Barrett, as Democrats boycotted the vote saying it was too close to the 3 November election.
What can we expect from this debate?
This is the final chance for both candidates to make their case to undecided voters before election day, 3 November.

There are new restrictions on this debate - after the chaos of the first, microphones will be muted to allow each candidate to speak.

Microphones will be turned off to allow Mr Biden and Mr Trump to make two minutes of opening remarks at the beginning of each 15-minute segment of the debate. They’ll be turned back on after that to allow a back-and forth. (Mr Trump has already branded the new rules “very unfair”).

The moderator is Kristen Welker of NBC News.

The topics to be covered are COVID-19, American families, race relations, climate change, national security and leadership.

With just 12 days to go until election day, this is a crucial opportunity for the pair to win over voters - although a record 47 million Americans have already cast their ballots.
