Chris Minns says 'last thing' needed is attack on immigrant communities

NSW Premier Chris Minns has appeared on ABC's breakfast program to discuss the Bondi Beach shooting that killed 15 people, and his government's response.

Minns has called for a royal commission into last Sunday's attack, with Prime Minister Anthony Albanese indicating he would support such a move.

"This is a mammoth task ahead of us," Minns told ABC.

Minns was asked about a planned anti-immigration rally set to be held in Sydney later today, and said that although the state government can't prevent the marchers, there will be a heavy police presence.

"What I would say is this is the last thing we need right now, an attack on immigrants or immigrant communities. The Jewish community are burying their dead. They deserve an opportunity to do that with a state of grace and with some peace," he said.

"We are not going to solve this huge problem with more hate."

Minns called the public to "do something positive" in the wake of the attack to honour the legacy of those killed last weekend.

"Take one small step to try and rebuild community harmony after a horrible week."

Welcome to the live blog

Thanks for joining our coverage of Australia's national day of reflection, one week after 15 people were killed in an attack on a Hanukkah festival at Bondi Beach last Sunday.

Flags will fly at half-mast, and buildings will be lit in yellow as the nation stands in solidarity with the country's Jewish community.

Lights will beam into the sky above Bondi Pavilion, where thousands of flowers and tributes have been laid since the tragedy.

Australians have been asked to light a candle and place it in their front window, before observing a minute's silence at 6.47pm AEDT.

We'll have more updates throughout the day.
