Lighthouse Christian College in Melbourne’s southeast has been criticised after releasing guidelines to parents that suggest face masks must be worn only in school colours.

In a post to Facebook and a video sent home to parents last week, the school said children should wear only plain one-coloured masks that match the school uniform.

In the video sent home to parents, Executive Principal Avril Howard said masks should be worn that adhere to the "student face mask guidelines".

The video has since been removed from YouTube.
The masks allowed could be re-usable or single use, but must be plain and in black, white, grey or blue, with no bandanas or scarfs allowed.

The school said that students would not be prevented from wearing masks that didn't comply with the guidelines.

It has also made masks available at reception for students who don't have them.
Many on social media were quick to criticise the school's guidelines.

"People are going to have a hard enough time finding fabric as it is, let alone having to make sure it is one solid colour," said one Facebook user.

Face masks were made mandatory throughout metropolitan Melbourne and Mitchell Shire from Thursday last week.

While many students are learning from home, year 11 and 12 students continue to attend face-to-face learning.

Residents in metropolitan Melbourne are subject to stay-at-home orders and can only leave home for essential work, study, exercise or care responsibilities. It is also mandatory to wear masks in public.

People in Australia must stay at least 1.5 metres away from others. Check your state’s restrictions on gathering limits.

If you are experiencing cold or flu symptoms, stay home and arrange a test by calling your doctor or contact the Coronavirus Health Information Hotline on 1800 020 080.
