Victorian households are still to claim millions of dollars up for grabs as part of the state government's energy comparison website.

Two-thirds of the way through the scheme, only about a quarter of the funds have been claimed, and applications close at the end of the year.

Labor funded $48 million for the scheme in its current budget, to encourage people to search for a better energy deal. By visiting the comparison website, households are eligible for a one-off $50 reward, no strings attached.

More than 237,000 households have claimed the cash since the scheme launched in July, the Victorian Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning said.

This represents almost $12 million or 25 per cent of the available budget.

Households have until December 31 to use the comparison website and register for the bonus. They are not required to take up an offer or switch power plans to receive the cash.

The bonus is limited to properties, not individuals, and all energy providers are required by state law to give details of their offers to the website.

There have been 1.5 million visits to the site www.vic.gov.au/victorianenergycompare since it was first launched three years ago.

The website can offer households savings of hundreds of dollars a year on gas and electricity bills, by considering the average daily kilowatt hours and suggesting suitable deals from alternative suppliers.
