Morrison headed to Cats as ALFW top pick

Geelong are likely to select Nina Morrison at No.1 in the AFLW Draft with Madison Prespakis, arguably the top available talent, to land at Carlton.

The metro nomination of Madison Prespakis means arguably the top talent in the AFLW draft will go to Carlton with the No.3 selection.

Expansion team Geelong have the top two picks and they are set to recruit local stars Nina Morrison and Sophie Van De Heuvel.

North Melbourne, also about to debut in the women's league, will recruit identical twins Chloe and Libby Haines.

In Tuesday's state-based draft, Victorian players could also nominate their region - metro, Geelong or all of Victoria.

Prespakis opted for metro, rather than Geelong, and that puts the Blues in the box seat to recruit the highly-rated midfielder.

The 17-year-old from outer-suburban Sunbury was best afield on August 31 at the national under-18 exhibition match in Adelaide.

Morrison, 17, also played well for Victoria in their win over an Allies composite team.

She tested extremely well in the AFLW draft combine.

Morrison and Prespakis have been the national under-18 standouts this year, winning the TAC Cup best and fairest award and also being named the joint MVPs at the national championships.

Van De Heuvel is a state-level cricketer and the right-arm fast bowler plans to continue in the two sports.

The Haines twins are from Burnie and, given North have first access to Tasmanian players, they could end up together at the Kangaroos.

North's first pick is at No.25.

Olivia Purcell is another Geelong Falcons player likely to go early in the draft, while 22-year-old Hawthorn defender Jayde Van Dyk is likely to be the first mature-age player selected.
