National Australia Bank has promoted Gary Lennon to chief financial officer following the resignation of Craig Drummond.

NAB poached Mr Drummond from Bank of America Merrill Lynch's local operations in mid 2013 but he has quit after overseeing the bank's capital raising and disposal of overseas assets including Clydesdale Bank.

"Craig has completed what he wanted to achieve with us and has decided that now is the time for him to move on to the next phase in his career," chief executive Andrew Thorburn said in a statement.

Mr Lennon has been NAB's executive general manager finance since 2010.
