International travellers are about to be hit with new rules for taking powdered substances in their carry-on luggage.
According to an Australian government announcement "people travelling internationally will notice some changes to how they are screened in Australia ... from 30 June 2018".
"There will be quantity restrictions on some types of powders, but most common powders remain unrestricted," it said.
These restrictions will also apply to domestic passengers who depart from international terminals.
What powders can I fly with?
Like with liquids, aerosols and gels, powders will now need to be presented to airport security separately.
First the good news - there will be no limit on so-called "organic" powders that can be taken on board.
The new rules state that powders such as baby formula, coffee, protein powder and "most cosmetics" fall into this category.
But new 350g limits will be placed on inorganic powder or "powder not consisting of, or derived from, living matter".
Inorganic powders include salt, sand, talcum powder, powdered deodorant and some cleaning products.
And passengers won't be allowed to tip powders out to fall under the 350g threshold.
The government has not said why it has introduced the new restrictions, but it comes after other countries like the US have taken similar measures for security purposes.
