Not first medal mistake for embattled LNP candidate

Labor has called on the prime minister to sack the Liberal National Party candidate for Longman over another revelation about a military medal.

By-election candidate Trevor Ruthenberg earlier this week apologised to voters after he incorrectly claimed to have a medal for distinguished service in peacekeeping and non-war operations.

Mr Ruthenberg says he has a lesser medal, recognising his service in the air force, and he simply wrote down the wrong medal name.

Malcolm Turnbull accepted the candidate's explanation as an "honest mistake".

However, The Courier-Mail newspaper on Thursday reported the mistake was not a one-off.

Mr Ruthenberg's personal website, published when he was the state MP for Kallangur, also included the inaccurate claim he was an Australian Service Medal recipient.

The site includes a photograph of him wearing the Australian Defence Medal.

Labor frontbencher Jim Chalmers said Mr Ruthenberg should stand down today, as he could no longer pretend it was a one-off mistake.

"If it doesn't end that way then Malcolm Turnbull should sack him."

An LNP spokesman said the personal website reflected the same error which occurred on the parliamentary website, and Mr Ruthenberg had apologised and corrected the record.
