NRL player Anthony Watts has had an AVO taken out against him after he was charged with assaulting a woman at a house party in Coogee.

His club, the Sydney Roosters, says it's investigating Watts and team-mate Todd Carney who went out together after the Roosters' 24-6 loss to the Brisbane Broncos in Gosford on Saturday.

Carney was recently put on a good behaviour bond for drink-driving.

The club said it would investigate the events of the night and provide a report to the NRL within 48 hours.

Sydney Roosters chief executive Steve Noyce said the seriousness of the charge underlined the need to ensure that all the facts were established before any judgment was made by the club.

Police said the 24-year-old was charged after he allegedly punched a woman, also 24, in the face during an argument at a Coogee apartment about 4am (AEST) on Sunday.

Watts allegedly punched the woman in the face, before striking her numerous times to the back of the head, police said in a statement.

The woman was allegedly thrown into a couch and struck her head.

She suffered bruising and swelling to her left eye as a result of the alleged incident.

Watts was bailed to appear before Waverley Local Court on April 21.

A provisional domestic apprehended violence order (AVO) has been taken out against him.
