NSW govt, Labor in close fight: Newspoll

The NSW government is facing a nail-biter at the next state election with Labor closing the gap to 50-50 after preferences, according to the latest Newspoll.

NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian has brushed aside talk of working with a hung parliament.

The latest Newspoll suggests the Liberal leader is facing a minority government or a slim majority when voters go to the polls on March 23.

The coalition and opposition are 50-50 on a two-party preferred basis, although Labor's primary vote has jumped two points to 36 per cent.

That's an improvement for the Berejiklian government, which was trailing the opposition 52-48 in December, The Australian reported on Wednesday.

"We always knew it would be tight," the premier told reporters in Sydney.

"My focus is on delivering for the citizens of this state. That's been my focus from day one and will continue to be."

When asked about the possibility of a hung parliament and how that might affect voters, Ms Berejiklian said: "I wouldn't presume to tell what voters think. That's a matter for them."

"I appreciate other people want to talk about other things but when it comes to delivering and performing I want to be judged by what we deliver for the citizens of this state," she said.

Ms Berejiklian leads Labor Leader Michael Daley as preferred premier 44-31 but the number of voters dissatisfied with her performance has risen.

Cabinet minister Rob Stokes said the premier was doing a "great job".

"We're a united team, we've got a great message to tell and we're busy just focusing on the needs of the community," he told reporters on Wednesday.

Fellow minister Stuart Ayres acknowledged the election would be close, especially in his western Sydney seat of Penrith.
