A man has died in police custody after he was arrested over a domestic violence matter in Sydney's west.

A man has died in NSW Police custody after being arrested over allegations of domestic violence in western Sydney.

The 29-year-old was taken to Mount Druitt Police Station after police were called to a home at Rooty Hill about 11.45am Friday.

About an hour later he was found unconscious in the charge area of the station, NSW Police said.

"Police rendered first aid until paramedics arrived; however, he died a short time later," they said in a statement.

A critical incident investigation will be overseen by the Law Enforcement Conduct Commission.

The NSW Coroner will determine the cause of death and make findings about events leading up to the incident.
