Parole board failed Jill Meagher, others

The community is asking how serial rapist Adrian Ernest Bayley was allowed to walk the streets of Melbourne.

Many have been left scratching their heads questioning why Jill Meagher's killer was able to walk the streets, despite his long list of prior offences.

Adrian Ernest Bayley will likely die in prison after one murder and 10 rapes during a violent crime spree spanning more than 20 years.

He was found guilty on Thursday of raping three more women as he prowled the streets of St Kilda, including two victims just months before he raped and killed Ms Meagher.

An outpouring of anger came soon after a suppression order on Bayley's past was lifted on Thursday.

Politicians, anti-violence groups and members of the community questioned how somebody with a rap sheet like Bayley's could be granted parole.

Some took to social media to vent their anger, many calling on a review of the justice system.

"Unbelievable, he was protected by our judicial system after victimising so many women," one woman posted on Facebook.

"Why are men given a reprieve after raping numerous women?" another asked.

Ms Meagher's family also slammed the Victorian Parole Board for its failure to protect their daughter and others in the community.
