Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney joins vigil for victims of a mass shooting

Australia's snowboard great Scotty James vows for a comeback after winning silver at Milan-Cortina Games...

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has criticised the Liberal party after Angus Taylor won the Liberal party leadership vote on Friday.

Speaking at the New South Wales Labor Conference in Orange, Mr Albanese says Mr Taylor and his new deputy, Senator Jane Hume had both damaged their party through their ongoing opposition to Labor's tax cuts, cost of living relief measures and renewable energy plans.

Mr Albanese also criticised the Liberal party's treatment of Ms Ley, the first female leader of the Liberal party in 80 years.

"You had Angus Taylor on Wednesday night go out and do a press conference, saying he resigned from the frontbench, not saying he was challenging, and not give a single policy reason for why Sussan Ley should be removed as the first female leader of the Liberal party after less than one year in that position."

Ms Ley has resigned from the parliament following the leadership spill, which triggers a by-election of her seat of Farrer.

Independent candidate for Farrer Michelle Milthorpe says she will run for the upcoming by-election, triggered by the resignation of former Opposition leader Sussan Ley.

During the 2025 federal election, Ms Milthorpe came second after Ms Ley, gaining 19.95 per cent of first preference votes.

Ms Milthorpe has thanked Ms Ley for her contribution to the community, but says it's time for Farrer to back an independent candidate.

"Unfortunately, the ongoing instability and undermining of her leadership meant that regional communities like us have been sidelined by the Coalition as it focuses on internal power struggle. It's a telling indication of a party's values that a member who has served for nearly 25 years stood alone at her final media conference with no evident backing from her party."

The Liberal party has yet to announces a candidate for the seat of Farrer, while One Nation has confirmed it will contest the seat.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney and the Opposition leader Pierre Poilievre have visited a memorial for the victims of a mass shooting in Tumbler Ridge, British Columbia on Friday local time.

Authorities said an 18-year-old alleged shooter killed her mother and 11-year-old stepbrother in their northern British Columbia home on Tuesday before heading to a nearby Secondary School and opening fire, killing five children and a teacher.

The alleged offender took her own life, and 25 people were injured in the attack.

Royal Canadian Mounted Police Deputy Commissioner Dwayne McDonald says they have seized two firearms, one from the school and one from the alleged offender's home.

“Our investigation has also been able to determine that the main firearm believed to used in the mass shooting at the school has also never been seized by the RCMP and its origin is currently unknown. Efforts continue to identify the owners and the sources of all other firearms.”

Queensland Police have confirmed a team of Chinese officials have come to Brisbane to investigate an alleged assault against an infant who had hot coffee poured on him in 2024.

The alleged offender, who is a Chinese national, left Australia in August 2024 after the alleged assault, and his location is known to be in China.

In a statement on Saturday Queensland Police and the Australian Federal Police confirmed the visit between 2 to 6 February to investigate the matter.

Currently there's no extradition treaty between Australia and China, but China has extraterritorial jurisdiction to prosecute its citizens for conduct which occurs outside China.

Now in sports....

Australia's snowboard great Scotty James has failed in his bid for an elusive gold medal at the Milan-Cortina Games, after winning silver in halfpipe snowboarding.

James was seen in tears after he finished with silver for his second straight Olympics.

He's now Australia's most decorated Winter Olympian, with three medals to his name.

James says he's determined to make a comeback in four years going for gold again.
