Anthony Albanese has met Donald Trump at the president's welcome reception for world leaders in New York after the pair scheduled a formal meeting for October.

The prime minister and Mr Trump came face-to-face after Mr Albanese arrived at the evening event in New York with fiance Jodie Haydon.

Penny Wong has held talks with Iran's foreign minister just weeks after the Iranian Ambassador was expelled from Australia over allegations of orchestrating antisemitic attacks firebombing a synagogue and deli.

Senator Wong requested a face to face meeting to make clear the actions were unacceptable.

"I thought it was the right thing to do, to meet directly with my counterpart and to look him in the eye and tell him precisely why we made the decisions we made and what we believe has occurred. I made it very clear that the actions of the IRGC crossed a line."

Australia's world-first social media age ban is being promoted to other nations during a packed final day at the United Nations General Assembly.

Anthony Albanese has met in New York with the E-U President, the Prime Minister of Malta, and the Prime Minister of Greece as he tries to build an international coalition to limit children's access to apps such as Instagram, TikTok and Snapchat.

Those efforts have already found support from European Union chief Ursula von der Leyen, as Europe considers introducing similar laws to bar children under 16 from social media.

She has promised to consider action at the European level in the coming months.

A drone fired from Yemen has struck the southern Israeli city of Eilat, wounding at least 20 people.

It's not clear if they were hurt by the drone or an interceptor, but it is known that Houthi rebels in Yemen have regularly fired drones and missiles at Israel in what they say is solidarity with Palestinians in the Gaza Strip.

Meanwhile, Israeli forces are pushing towards the heart of Gaza City, after ignoring international calls to stop an offensive the government says aims to destroy the last stronghold of Hamas militants.

Health officials says at least 20 people were killed and many others wounded when Israeli air strikes hit a shelter housing displaced families near a market in the middle of the city.

The most powerful cyclone of 2025 has crashed into the south China coast after battering Hong Kong and killing 17 people in Taiwan.

China's marine authority has issued its highest red wave warning for the first time this year, forecasting storm surges of up to 2.8 metres in parts of Guangdong province.

Chinese authorities have also shut down schools and businesses in at least 10 cities, with almost two million people evacuated from the southern Chinese province.

In Taiwan's eastern Hualien county, 17 people remain missing after a barrier lake overflowed and sent a wall of water into a town.

This resident from Hualien says he evacuated at the right time.

"The flood came rushing from the direction of the Mataian Bridge, like a tsunami. Luckily I evacuated early, if I had been 20 minutes later, I wouldn't have made it back."

Conservative darling Andrew Hastie has been backed as a future Liberal leader by demoted frontbencher Jacinta Nampijinpa Price.

Sussan Ley's leadership is under growing pressure with conservative MPs rallying behind Mr Hastie after he faced an internal backlash to comments calling for Australia's reindustrialisation.

Senator Nampijinpa Price has criticised current leader Ms Ley for failing to show faith in her.

She has told radio station 2GB the Mr Hastie has what it takes to be a future leader.

"Oh, look, I think so. I think he's passionate. He's got conviction. You know, the topics that I spoke to at CPAC, which I think we should be focused on - our key institutions, which are family, community and our nation. I think at the core of Andrew Hastie is leading with. I think he'd make a remarkable leader."

Australia's drug regulator has approved a new drug used to treat the early stages of Alzheimers disease.

The approval by the Therapeutic Goods Administration of the drug known as Lecanameb has come after two earlier failed attempts to approve the medication.

Lecanameb is sold under the brand name of Leqembi in Australia.

To sport, two football players have avoided jail after pleading guilty to deliberately receiving yellow cards for $10,000.

Ex-Macarthur Bulls duo Kearyn Baccus and Clayton Lewis will instead serve a two-year conditional release order, similar to a good behaviour bond.

They have also been ordered to repay the $10,000 they received as a fine.

The charges related to a Macarthur game against Sydney FC on December 9, 2023 when bets were placed on Macarthur to receive at least four yellow cards in the match.
