Australia is marking 25 years since the September 11 attacks, which killed 2,977 people, including 10 Australians.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Foreign Minister Penny Wong have issued a statement to commemorate the occasion, saying Australia continues to remember those killed, the survivors and their loved ones who continue to carry the weight of the attacks.
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defence Richard Marles, tells nine's today program the world changed that day
"This of course sparked wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. More than 40 000 Australians served in them, more than 40 lost their lives. 10 Australians lost their lives on that day. And it is a day which has completely shaped the world in which we live now. And my thoughts on this anniversary are with them and those who paid the ultimate sacrifice on the day but also in the wars since."

Russia's President Vladimir Putin has arrived in India's capital of New Delhi, ahead of an 11-member* BRICS summit, amid wars in Ukraine and Iran.
The summit is expected to be dominated by wars in the Middle East and Ukraine, as well as involve discussions around economic challenges.
A Russian news agency broadcasted Vladimir Putin being greeted by India's Minister of State for External Affairs, Kirti Vardhan Singh upon his arrival at Palam Air Force Station.
India's diplomatic sources say the Russian leader and Iran's President Masoud Pezeshkian are due to hold talks with India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi, while Chinese President Xi Jinping is also due to meet him on the sidelines.
The meeting marks Xi Jinping's first visit to India since 2019, six years after a deadly military clash along their disputed Himalayan border.

A parliamentary inquiry into the value of skilled migration to Australia has heard calls to introduce sector-specific measures to ensure the program addresses skills shortages.
The federal inquiry has conducted hearings around the country and has heard calls for reform to existing migration policy, including concerns over issues including housing supply and skills training for regional workers.
Carina Ford is co-chair of the Migration Law Committee within the Law Council of Australia.
She has outlined the council's recommendations for reforms to Australia's existing migration policy, including changes to the points assessment for skilled migrants seeking residency.
"Reform the points test Including to better recognise trade qualifications and the contributions of spouses of partners and spouses in the skilled intake. Release the findings of its review of the points test system, provide better incentives for high-achieving student visa holders to stay in Australia."

An inquiry into reforms to the National Disability Insurance Scheme is underway,
People with Disabilities Australia advocate and NDIS participant, Thara Pech, says changes to the scheme over recent years have adversely affected people who use it.
Ms Pech says the system is calling on the Albanese Government to reject the National Disability Insurance Scheme Amendment Bill*.
"And we are concerned about the effect it is going to have with the reforms coming through and the scheme being unable to sustain the flow of this reforms, which will continue to affect people. People who are going to be left without support, people who are going to be neglected, people who are going to be abused because a system is unable to sustain the reforms that are coming through."

European scientists say extreme heat is accelerating the retreat of Alpine glaciers at an alarming rate.
In its latest report, the Copernicus Climate Change Service says August 2026 was the hottest August it has ever recorded, pushing the planet's average global temperature to 1.65 degrees above pre-industrial levels.
Vanda Bonardo is the President of an International Commission set up to protect the Alps in south-central Europe, and says across the Alps, strong winter snowfall has not been enough to offset the significant impact of such heat on glaciers.
She says even the Miage Glacier in France, which is more protected from climate change than other glaciers, is quickly retreating.
Italian then English vo: "The Miage Glacier is a glacier that is less affected by climate change precisely because it is covered in debris. We visited it in 2020 and then returned in 2026, but in the meantime it had receded by 15 meters, equivalent to a 5-storey building.”

To sport and in cycling,
Stefan Kung has claimed a second career time trial win at stage 18 of the Vuelta a Espana.
In the general classification, Movistar rider Enric Mas maintained a healthy lead of one minute 37 seconds over Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe's Primoz Roglic, who finished fourth in the stage and moved up to second overall.
Swiss rider Kung finished the stage ahead of Briton Callum Thornley and Portugal's Joao Almeida, who took second and third place, respectively.
"In the end I am just super happy to take the win here. I am alone on the podium today but it is a victory of the whole team and thanks to the guys also behind me working hard behind the scenes."
