The Coalition's Opposition Home Affairs spokesman, Jonno Duniam, has dismissed rumours he'll challenge Sussan Ley's leadership.

Her position is under pressure amid internal Liberal Party debates over climate policy and net zero targets.

Mr Duniam says he is firmly backing Ms Ley's handling of the contentious energy debate, characterising her involvement as "constructive and conciliatory".

He says she allows all factions within the party to have their say in a robust manner.

Opposition Communications Spokesperson Melissa McIntosh is voicing strong concerns about the enforceability of the upcoming social media ban for under-16s.

The ban, which takes effect on December 10th, will bar users under 16 from accessing eight major platforms including Facebook, TikTok, and X.

Ms Mcintosh says that there is nothing more important than protecting kids from the harms of social media.

She says as a parent, she's experienced it herself - but argues there are potential risks associated with the age verification technology used.

"I've become really concerned that this social media ban is going to work, and I've been expressing my concerns over weeks and weeks now.... Now, we don't know which age verification technology is going to be used, and so many Australians contact me, concerned about the potential use of digital identification."

New York City voters have chosen Zohran Mamdani to be the city's new mayor.

The 34-year-old state politician is set to become the city's most liberal mayor in generations, defeating former governor Andrew Cuomo and Republican Curtis Sliwa in a victory for the Democratic party's progressive wing.

The democratic socialist will make history as the city's first Muslim mayor, the first of South Asian heritage and the first born in Africa.

He will also be the city's youngest mayor in more than a century when he takes office on January the 1st.

The nation's race discrimination commissioner has backed trade unions in calls for a national inquiry into racism in Australian workplaces.

Surges in racism over the past five years have been driven by COVID-19, the Indigenous voice referendum, the October 7 attacks and anti-Indian political messaging.

Advocates say systemic racism is stopping people progressing in their jobs but data is often incomplete because people are afraid to come forward or don't know where to make a complaint.

Race Discrimination Commissioner Giridharan Sivaraman says that the ever-changing face of its victims shows racism is not improving and remains a structural defect in Australia.

"We have to act now. This isn't getting better and racism is diminishing people at work, it is impacting businesses, it's costing our economy and our society."

A First Nations innovator has been recognised for emerging science and Indigenous Sea Country knowledge at the 26th Prime Minister's Prizes for Science.

Professor Michael Ware is leading a world-first sea grass restoration project that employs Aboriginal divers, creates sustainable livelihoods and is reviving cultural connections to the ocean.

Professor Wear is a Malgana [[Mahl-gah-nah]] Traditional Custodian of Shark Bay in Western Australia.

The founder of Tidal Moon, Australia's first Indigenous-owned sea cucumber fishery and marine restoration enterprise, Professor Ware says he's grateful for the acknowledgement.

"It's amazing, I think, it's a humble feeling I got and I want to always make sure I do my best and I'm the first but I don't want to be the last so it's a big task ahead for me."

In football,

Tottenham Hotspur central defender Micky van de Ven has scored a sensational solo goal in his side's 4-0 home win over F-C Copenhagen which has lifted the London club into the top eight in the Champions League.

The flying Dutchman took possession of the ball on the edge of his own penalty area in the 64th minute and sped the length of the pitch through a flimsy Copenhagen defence to smash home a shot and make it 3-0.

Spurs coach Thomas Frank says he was amazed by the goal.

"It felt like we had Lionel Messi turned into Micky van de Ven, running down from his own goal and all the way to the other end and the score-line. A fantastic goal. I think he's our top scorer in all competitions so he can keep going."
