Opposition leader Peter Dutton has announced the Coalition's nuclear energy transition plan, stating it will underpin the economic success of the country.
The Coalition claims its energy mix, which includes converting seven end-of-life coal-fired plants into nuclear reactors, will reduce energy bills by 44 per cent.
Mr Dutton says Australian families are already feeling the pain of energy costs and risks of blackouts under the Albanese government.
"If you look to jurisdictions like Ontario or in Tennessee, they are paying 18 cents a kilowatt hour for their power at the moment because they have renewables firmed up by nuclear. in South Australia at the moment people are paying 56 cents a kilowatt hour - three times the rate. So is it any wonder that we had a three-fold increase in the number of manufacturing businesses which have closed in our country over the last two and a half years?"
He says the situation under the federal government is only going to get worse, adding it will only bring grief to the country.
The Australian Institute of Health and Welfare has released a report which reveals almost 850 children are locked up in detention across Australia on any given night.
The data shows that 60 per cent of the children held in detention are Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders, despite making up just 6.6 per cent of the population.
First Nations children were 27 times more likely to be detained, and the rate of incarceration relative to others has also climbed, up 7 per cent since 2020.
It comes as several state governments across the country introduce harsher penalties for youth offending.
US Secretary of State Antony Blinken has urged Syria's new leadership to uphold women’s and minority rights.
Mr Blinken has also asked for the new leadership to prevent extremist influence, and avoid actions that could escalate violence.
He describes the time as a significant opportunity and considerable risk for Syria and the region, as he left Jordan for Turkiye.
"We're back in the region at a time of both real promise but also peril for Syria and for its neighbours. And the focus of our work here is to coordinate efforts across the region to support the Syrian people as they transition away from Assad's brutal dictatorship."
He adds Jordan has a critical role to play in supporting the Syrian people in this transition.
The US State Department confirmed discussions in Turkiye would focus on Syria, counterterrorism, and regional stability, following Mr Blinken's recent meeting with President Tayyip Erdogan.
The parents of a six-year-old boy in Adelaide have been charged with criminal neglect and deception offences. The Adelaide couple, both aged 44 have been accused of faking their child's cancer diagnosis, to raise funds.
They allegedly shaved their son's head and eyebrows and put him in a wheelchair with bandages.Police say this was to make it look like he had received radiotherapy, and it is alleged the parents sought donations for medical treatment.
The parents received funds of almost 60-thousand dollars in two weeks. It is understood that the child is currently being looked after by another relative.
Superstar skier Jakara Anthony will return to Australia to commence her rehab, after undergoing surgery on a broken collarbone in Oslo.
