TRANSCRIPT

Former Defence Minister and long-time member of the Liberal Party Kevin Andrews has died at the age of 69.

Mr Andrews had been fighting cancer for the last year.

He represented the seat of Menzies in Melbourne's east between 1991 and 2022, and holding prominent roles in both the Abbott and Howard coalition governments.

Queensland Liberal M-P Ted O'Brien says Mr Andrews was a particularly strong family man.

"You know, when I first entered parliament, the thing that struck me about Kevin was how much he was absolutely a Liberal and his extraordinary love of family and his recognition that family really is the core institution. And I was delighted to hear that, although it is sad, Margaret and the family were there at his passing. And so I really do want to join others who today are coming out to express their sorrow."

The South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol is facing the possibility of a second impeachment motion in parliament after his decision to impose martial law in the country.

A first motion, called by the Opposition Democratic Party, fell through due to a boycott from members of the ruling People Power Party.

But pressure towards the ruling party members has increased, with at least seven of them now appearing willing to vote in favour of an impeachment that would see Mr Yoon remain in office until removed by the Constitutional Court of the country.

Mr Yoon is currently being investigated by South Korean authorities and has been handed a travel ban, with several of his cabinet members already being detained.

At least one energy expert says there is merit in some of the federal opposition's nuclear power plan.

The cost for the Coalition's scheme to build seven nuclar power plants by 2037 would put taxpayers back by a total of $337 billion, with Mr Dutton revealing data by Frontier Economics modeling that shows the government's renewable energy plan would cost even more.

Energy Minister Chris Bowen has criticised the Opposition for stalling to reveal their plans, saying there is no future for nuclear energy in Australia.

But Professor Mahmoud Mostafavi, Head of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at Monash University has told SBS that the combination of nuclear and renewable energies can offer cheaper options to Australians.

"Having an energy mix that is reliable and can ensure our sovereignty, and at the same time energy security, is incredibly important. At the same time, we have (a) climate crisis. We cannot burn gas and coal forever. So there has to be a way out of burning gas and coal, using renewables, that is reliable."

Canada's Deputy Prime Minister says they are prepared to handle any potential tariffs that might be imposed on their products by the upcoming Trump administration.

Donald Trump has said he plans to sign a document adding a 25 per cent tariff on all products coming into the United States from the Canadian border on his first day in office.

Mr Trump has said this decision is in response to all the "drugs and crime" that has allegedly been imported into his country from the north.

Experts says this decision could cause an unnecessary strain in the relations between the two countries.

Chrystia Freeland, Deputy Prime Minister of Canada, says her country would respond to such a decision made by the upcoming U-S president.

"It's really important to hope for the best and to prepare for the worst. And the Prime Minister has been clear that in the event that the United States were to impose unjustified tariffs on Canada, of course we would respond, and the Canadian response would necessarily be robust. I am confident that it would be effective."

The body was found and reported to police by a person who was out for a run last Monday at Sir Joseph Banks Park morning near the airport.

Authorities say they are concerned for the wellbeing of Zhuojun's husband Jai-Bao "Rex" Chen and have asked for anyone who may have information him to come forward.

In football,

Twenty years after the miracle of Lisbon, fans of the Greek national team have had the opportunity to see some of their idols up close.

Three of the key players who were part of the team that won the Euro in 2004 are currently on tour around Australia.

Angelos Charisteas , Giorgos Karagounis and captain Theodoros Zagorakis have already visited Adelaide and Melbourne and are currently on their final stop in Sydney before returning home.

They have taken part in exhibition matches and other events for the Greek community.

Scorer of Greece's first-ever goal in the final round of a Euro, Giorgos Karagounis has told SBS Greece they wouldn't exchange those moments for anything in the world.

"That whole thing that we lived through, you can't buy it with all the wealth, all the billions in the world. People who have billions and trillions and billionaires would have liked to have lived even one of those moments that we lived through and they would trade for it. But there's no way that we would (exchange those moments.) There not even one in a billion. We would never think about doing that because what we experienced, you can't describe it or give it value. There's no value to it, it's priceless. And for something that's priceless you would never even think about negotiating for it."
