Ten people have been injured - nine of them critically - after a stabbing rampage on a British train.

British Transport Police say the attack took place on a train service travelling between Doncaster to London's King's Cross, unfolding shortly after the LNER train left Peterborough station.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer has called the attack deeply concerning, while Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood has urged people to avoid comment and speculation at this early stage about the motive behind the incident.

Britain's counter terrorism police are investigating, but Conservative MP for Huntingdon, Ben Obese-Jecty, says little is known about the two men who have been arrested over the attack.

"No information on the two individuals thus far. Very difficult to know exactly how both individuals were involved, so you mentioned, that one of them was the perpetrator. I don't know enough about the incident to be able to give you any more information, I'm afraid."

US President Donald Trump has ordered the Pentagon to plan for potential military action in Nigeria, accusing the government of failing to rein in the persecution of Christians in the West African country.

Nigeria's President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has pushed back on Trump's comments, with the leader declaring the characterisation of Nigeria as a religiously intolerant country does not reflect the national reality.

The country has long faced insecurity from various fronts including the Boko Haram extremist group, which seeks to establish its radical interpretation of Islamic law.

While Christians are among those targeted in attacks in Nigeria, analysts say the majority of victims of armed groups are Muslims in Nigeria's Muslim-majority north, where most attacks occur.

The Nationals have officially walked away from support of Australia's net zero emissions by 2050 policy.

Party leader David Littleproud says the decision in the party room was unanimous, taken after discussion of a Page Research Centre report commissioned by the Nationals and a similar decision by the party's Federal Council on Saturday.

The Labor government remains committed to net zero, and has set a target of 82 per cent of electricity sourced from renewables by 2030 as part of the key to meeting its climate goals.

But Mr Littleproud argues that approach is damaging the economies of regional communities.

"This is about bringing common sense back to climate and energy policy. This is about saying we're going to live up to our commitments internationally . We're going to do that sensibly - but we're going to do what they're doing - at their pace, not streak ahead. And so what I want to do, is show today some leadership."

More wild weather could hit parts of eastern Australia today after severe thunderstorms powered through south-east Queensland and northern New South Wales.

The Bureau of Meteorology's Angus Hines says there is still more to come.

"If we now look at Sunday, we're going to see another risk of some rain and storm activity but we will also notice it's a much smaller area hugging the coastline from about Rockhampton down to the far north of NSW... So many places will not see the same risk but that doesn't mean there's no risk at all. There is another chance for severe thunderstorms on Sunday."

There are reports of shattered car windows and damaged homes in some areas, caused by the first round of storms in south-east Queensland that brought hailstones up to 9 centimetres wide, and wind gusts of up to 100 kilometres an hour.

In New South Wales, parts of the Hunter, mid-north coast, and central tablelands have recorded hailstones as large as 7cm, while Grafton in the Northern Rivers region received 70mm of rain in half an hour.

A new digital service is being launched today that the government hopes will strengthen protections against domestic violence.

The service - called DV Notify - will send real-time text and email updates to victim-survivors from the arrest of an alleged perpetrator through to final sentencing.

The initial rollout is taking place across the next 12 months in three trial locations in New South Wales, and will also be available in ten community languages, including Arabic, Chinese and Hindi.

Social Services Minister Tanya Plibersek and New South Wales Minister for Women Jodie Harrison say it will help victim-survivors make informed decisions about their safety.

[[If you or someone you know wants to talk about family or domestic violence, call 1800RESPECT on 1800 737 732 or call Lifeline on 13 11 14. In an emergency, call 000.]]

To sport,

Matthew Hauser has won the Noosa Triathlon title to cap a world-beating season in which he thinks he's helped move the needle in Olympic-distance racing.

After a crowded 1.5km swim, the Hervey Bay junior broke from the pack on a steamy 40km bike leg and held off American John Reed by one minute over the 10km run to win in one hour 42 minutes and 38 seconds today.
