  • The Reserve Bank leaves interest rates on hold;
  • And in football, Matildas coach Tony Gustavsson says he wants to create a safe space for young players to develop.

The federal opposition has been given the chance to review the legal advice the government received on a High Court ruling that forced the release of 148 immigration detainees.

The individuals were released after the High Court ruled last month that indefinite immigration detention is unlawful.

Deputy Prime Minister Richard Marles says the Coalition should back the federal government's legislative amendments to allow courts to order the detention of some people released as a result of the High Court’s ruling.the Coalition should back the federal government's legislative amendments to allow courts to order the detention of some people released as a result of the High Court’s ruling.

Liberal senator Bridget McKenzie says she wants to the legislation debated and passed as soon as possible.

"We're going to do everything in our power to make sure that Australians are safe. We won't be leaving the Parliament until we have got the legislation in place to ensure the safety and security of Australians. But for the Labor party to now say: 'We offered you a briefing, we offered to give you the legal advice, etc is simply a ruse.' The fact is they got it wrong, we have stood ready to do the right thing on this issue from day one."

Meanwhile, a third detainee released after last month's High Court ruling has been arrested by police.

Victoria Police say the 33-year-old man has been taken into custody in Dandenong, south-east Melbourne, for breaching his reporting requirements and allegedly contacting minors.

In 2012, he pleaded guilty to obtaining girls for a prostitution syndicate.

One recently released detainee appeared in Adelaide Magistrates Court yesterday on two counts of indecent assault.

In New South Wales, police over the weekend charged another recently released detainee with drug possession.

Borrowers have been spared another interest rate hike in the lead-up to Christmas.

The Reserve Bank of Australia has kept interest rates on hold at 4.35 per cent - a 12-year high.

Last month’s rate rise was the Reserve Bank’s 13th since May 2022.

The rate decision was widely expected after a surprisingly weak monthly inflation read of 4.9 per cent in October, down from 5.6 per cent in September.

The Bureau of Meteorology has issued a heatwave warning for large parts of the country by the end of the week.

The heatwave has already begun in New South Wales - developing in the west, moving towards central and eastern areas.

Inland Australia is forecast to experience 40-degree heat for consecutive days.

Residents are being urged to plan ahead to beat the heat - including finding a cool place to take shelter; and checking in with family, friends and neighbours who may be more vulnerable to the high temperatures.

Matildas coach Tony Gustavsson says he stands by his decision to field an inexperienced lineup against Canada on Saturday, with the team losing 5-nil to the Olympic champions.

On Wednesday, the nations will face-off again in a friendly that will be the farewell game for Canada's all-time leading international goal scorer Christine Sinclair.

Gustavsson says it was a pre-planned decision to field an inexperienced lineup in the game on Saturday; and then have a strong team play in Wednesday's game - ahead of February’s Olympic qualifiers against Uzbekistan.

He says he wants to create a "safe space" for young players to develop.

"Some people will go is this fair to the players to give them this type of experience. They love it. It is what they want. They want to play against top teams. They want to learn. As long as I make sure I create a safe space for them to get this experience. It is what they need."
