Floral tributes have been laid in Alice Springs for five-year-old Kumanjayi Little Baby.

Authorities say calm has now been restored after the arrest of the man alleged to have abducted and murdered the child.

The 47-year-old suspect was airlifted to Darwin after an angry crowd attacked him and tried to enter an Alice Springs hospital following his arrest on Thursday.

CEO of SNAICC National Voice for our Children, Catherine Liddle has told NITV people are taking the time to mourn.

"People are sitting with that grief. As a community, people are still going up and down with how they feel about it. There will be lots to process, particularly if you have been out there searching or deeply affected and a lot of people have been deeply affected. It will take time."

Melbourne police have arrested three people after a firebombing at a Docklands restaurant.

Police allege the males - aged 16, 19 and 22 - smashed glass doors and poured accelerant in the restaurant before setting it alight.

The fire was extinguished with minor damage.

The police allege the suspects were intercepted as they attempted to flee in a stolen vehicle, sparking a foot pursuit before the men were arrested.

Jerry cans were found inside the car.

An organised crime task force is investigating if the matter is linked to a string of similar incidents.

Today's state by-election in the seat of Nepean, on Victoria's Mornington Peninsula, is being closely watched as a litmus test of the growing support for Pauline Hanson's One Nation.

Recent polling suggests Liberal candidate Anthony Marsh will hold the wealthy, heartland seat against One Nation's Darren Hercus, but it could be a tight race.

The by-election was triggered by the sudden resignation of deputy state Liberal leader Sam Groth, and it's seen as an early test of Jess Wilson's leadership ahead Victoria's state election in November.

The result will also provide more insight into whether One Nation's surge in the polls will translate at the ballot box, as it did in South Australia's election in March, where the party won four seats.

A truck driver says rising fuel prices are pushing people in the trucking industry to the brink.

Sharna Chapman runs a four-truck business from the Victorian city of Echuca and says the industry is having to contend with astronomical fuel bills.

She told the ABC the fuel crisis is far more challenging than the pressures she faced during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic.

She broke down after revealing the cost of this month's fuel bill.

"$92 thousand dollars, sorry. February's bill was $40 thousand. So, the impact that it's having is just, it's unbelievable and people just don't understand until they're actually going through it."

The Unites States will withdraw about 5,000 troops from Germany within the next year.

The Pentagon announcement comes after US President Donald Trump threatened to remove troops from its NATO ally, following a row with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz.

Earlier this week, Mr Merz said the US was being humiliated in peace negotiations with Iran.

There are about 36,000 active-duty US troops in Germany.

Lawyers for Bosnian Serb war criminal Ratko Mladic say their client is close to death and should be released from jail in The Hague.

Mladic was sentenced to life in 2017 for genocide, war crimes and crimes against humanity during the wars in the former Yugoslavia between 1992 and 1995.

His lawyers say he has suffered a serious medical episode and should be released so he can be cared for in a hospice.

A judge has requested an independent medical review into his condition.

The 24-year-old world No.1 follows Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer in completing the set.

Sinner will be up against Alexander Zverev in Sunday's final.
