The International Court of Justice found Israel’s occupation of the Gaza strip and the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, to be unlawful in an advisory opinion issued in July 2024.

It also found that Israel's laws and actions violate the international prohibition on racial segregation and apartheid.

At the request of the UN General Assembly, the court was asked to give its view on Israel's policies and practices towards the Palestinians, and on the legal status of the occupation.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has rejected the ruling, describing it as a "decision of lies".
