Israel’s military says Iran has launched missiles at northern Israel, in the first such attack since a ceasefire was announced in early April.

Warning sirens have sounded across communities in northern Israel, with the military saying its defence systems are operating to intercept the threat.

The launch follows an Israeli strike on Beirut’s southern suburb of Dahiyeh, a Hezbollah stronghold, which Lebanon’s Health ministry says killed two people and wounded 20.

Iran had warned of retaliation after the Beirut strike, and has demanded an end to fighting in Lebanon as part of any peace deal with the United States.

The latest Newspoll has One Nation as Australia's most popular political party.

The poll of 1,240 voters online, conducted last week, and published in The Australian newspaper, has One Nation rising four points, to a primary vote of 31 per cent.

The Labor party has fallen one point, to 30 per cent.

The coalition falls two points, to 18 per cent.

These results largely mirrors the result of another poll, the Redbridge Group/Accent Research poll, conducted last week.

The latest Newspoll also has Prime Minister Anthony Albanese registering his worst net approval rating since he was elected in 2022, with 36 per cent of respondents satisfied with him, and 60 per cent dissatisfied.

More than 900 Australians have been recognised for their exceptional contribution to the country in the 2026 King's Birthday Honours List.

Among the 702 recipients awarded in the General Division of the Order of Australia are many unsung heroes doing their part to improve their communities.

Senior Noongar and Yamatji woman Mechelle Turvey has been honoured for her service to the Indigenous communities of Western Australia.

In 2022, Ms Turvey's 15-year-old son Cassius was murdered while walking home from school in Perth.

The award recognises her work in the years since training police officers in how to deal with victims of crime with empathy, care and support.

"I think one of the main things that I've been instrumental in doing in my team is actually getting out into the community, and actually engaging, one-on-one, person-to-person, instead of just sitting in the office and relaying things. So, it is about getting out there with Aboriginal people, getting police at the same table to clear up misunderstandings, and just to enhance that trust, and get over those barriers."

Former Australian of the Year and pioneering scientist Richard Scolyer has died aged 59 after a lengthy public battle with brain cancer.

The renowned melanoma pathologist and father of three helped save thousands of lives through groundbreaking skin cancer research.

Professor Scolyer was diagnosed with glioblastoma, an incurable and aggressive brain cancer, in 2023.

He was given six to eight months to live, but survived for three years after trialling a world-first immunotherapy treatment.

In an open letter published after his death, Professor Scolyer described his life as one “filled with happiness, optimism, opportunity and passion.”

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has declared himself a member of the "fun faction" as he backs plans to turn up the volume and boost capacity limits at the Sydney Opera House.

Residents in luxury apartments near the Opera House have regularly complained about noise, including during a performance from English band Florence and the Machine.

That performance left the Opera House with a $15,000 fine, but Mr Albanese says the venue is an iconic national asset and should be utilised to its full potential.

"Oh, look, I'm, I'm a member of the 'fun faction', so I think that, you know, the Opera House is an asset that should be maximised. It brings enormous economic activity, and it brings enormous joy for people who are able to see. I've seen concerts on the forecourt, there, the Pixies, Florence, and the Machine. They're all fantastic."

In tennis, Alexander Zverev has finally won his first major title.

The German is the 2026 French Open men's singles champion.... defeating Italian Flavio Cobolli in the final in a five set classic that lasted four hours and 16 minutes.

The score... 6-1, 4-6, 6-4, 6-7, 6-1.

29-year-old Zverev becomes the first German man to a win a major title since Boris Becker won the Australian Open thirty years ago.

Zverev says the support of the fans in Paris was a big factor in his victory.

"I was lying in that corner over there four years ago with seven broken ligaments and two fractured bones. I lost a Grand Slam final here two years ago. But now, finally, it's a happy end and thank you very much to the crowd. It's been, I really felt like the crowd was pushing me throughout the entire two weeks and without you guy s, I definitely would have not won the tournament, so thank you very much."
