Opposition leader Peter Dutton has announced if elected, the Coalition will introduce a new antisemitism taskforce led by the Australian Federal Police.

It comes as a firebombing at Melbourne's Adass Israel Synagogue is being investigated by Victoria Police and an Australian Federal Police counter-terrorism squad, with a meeting set for today.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese believes it has hallmarks of an act of terror, saying antisemitism has no place in Australia but Opposition Leader Peter Dutton has accused him of not being tough enough on the issue.

Mr Dutton says if the coalition is elected after next year's federal election, the federal police-led body will tasked with investigating historic complaints about antisemitism dating back to October 7, 2023.

"It'll take whatever resource is required and we'll take that advice from the AFP Commissioner. So it'll depend on how many of the matters have been resolved to the satisfaction of the AFP. And, but I'll make it very clear, whatever the resource requirements and whatever the costs, they will be met. And it'll be a very substantial task force that will provide reassurance to all Australians, that we don't discriminate against people on the basis of race or religion."

Syrians around the world are celebrating in the streets after hearing the news that President Basher al-Assad has fled Syria.

Syrian opposition forces have now taken control of the capital of Damascus and declared the end of 13 years of civil war and decades of Assad rule.

It took less than two weeks for rebel groups led by Hay'at Tahrir al-Sham to bring an end to the regime that led the country through over a decade of civil war.

Sydney-based Syrian activist Rifai Tammas told SBS Arabic he Syrian people feel optimistic about the change.

"It is the beginning of a new era for Syria's history. There is a lot of optimism among us. It's a sign of a better and brighter future than what we've experienced over the last 50 years. It is also evidence of the victory of the Syrian people's will. It is not a small matter what happened. We, the Syrian people, paid a heavy price for the freedom we obtained."

United States President-elect Donald Trump says on his first day in office he will pardon rioters involved in the January 6, 2021 Capitol attack.

Mr Trump told NBC News he plans to do it quickly - when asked when he planned to pardon his supporters who were charged in the attack aimed at overturning his 2020 election defeat.

He says there could be some exceptions to his pardons if the individuals had acted radical or crazy during the assault, which left more than 140 police officers injured and led to several deaths.

But Mr Trump has described the prosecutions of his supporters as inherently corrupt and has not ruled out pardoning the more than 900 defendants who had already pleaded guilty, including those accused of acting violently in the attack.

"Everybody on that committee. For what they did, honestly, they should go to jail. I’m going to look at everything. We’ll look at individual cases. But I’m going to be acting very quickly. First day, I'm looking first day. These people have been there — how long is it? Three, four years. They’ve been in there for years. And they’re in a filthy, disgusting place that shouldn’t even be allowed to be open."

New South Wales Police say more than 100 alleged drug dealers have been arrested in a statewide sting operation, with cars, cash and drugs seized.

Between November 22 and December 7, police arrested and charged 108 people as part of a strike force aiming to reveal dial-a-dealer schemes mostly related to cocaine.

Of these, 64 were charged with supplying a prohibited drug, 44 were charged with drug possession offences, and one person was also charged with domestic violence-related crimes.

Assistant Commissioner Peter McKenna says more than $20,000 worth of drugs were seized, including cocaine, MDMA, marijuana, ketamine and ice.

And in cricket,

A record-breaking knock by Ellyse Perry and Georgia Voll's maiden international hundred have lifted Australia to a comprehensive 122-run victory over India in the second women's ODI in Brisbane.

Perry belted six sixes - the most by an Australian in a single women's ODI innings - in her 105 off just 75 balls as Australia stormed to a 2-0 series lead on a scorching Sunday at Allan Border Field.

Earlier, 21-year-old Queenslander Voll backed up her impressive showing on debut in the series opener to score 101 off just 87 deliveries as Australia racked up an imposing 8-371.

Chasing an unlikely victory target of 372, the tourists showed more fight than when they were rolled for 100 on Thursday but were dismissed for 249 to fall well short of their target.
