The release of a second round of Israeli hostages is being delayed, with Hamas accusing Israel of failing to commit to the terms of their ceasefire agreement.

A senior Hamas official says Israel stopped the entry of 97 aid trucks into Gaza - a move Hamas says violates their agreed-upon four-day pause in fighting.

Israeli officials have denied breaking the terms of the Qatar-brokered [[cutter]] agreement.

Qatari officials say they are in ongoing talks with Israel and Hamas to resolve the delay as soon as possible.

Hundreds of climate activists have gathered in Newcastle overnight, in an effort to block coal-carrying ships from entering a major port in New South Wales.

Greens leader Adam Bandt was among thousands who flocked to Newcastle Port as part of a protest organised by climate group Rising Tide.

An estimated 3,000 activists are expected to spend 30 hours on the water in what is one of the largest climate protests in Australia's history.

This 15-year-old says she attended the protest because she's terrified for her future.

"I'm so angry that the government is destroying any chance of future for me, my friends. They continue to ignore and belittle the loud and angry voices of youth in this country. The government needs to stop funding new coal and gas projects and they need to start funding the transition plan to renewable energy. They've been told this since before I was born. This should not be a discussion anymore."

Climate Change Minister Chris Bowen has criticised the Greens' action, citing his government's new investments in batteries for wind and solar farms.

Australia and the Philippines have begun joint sea and air patrols in the South China Sea as Pacific nations remain cautious about an increasingly assertive China.

The three-day exercises follow discussions earlier this year on joint patrols to underscore what the countries say is their commitment to closer cooperation and a rules-based order in the region.

It also comes days after Manila took similar steps with the United States, concluding patrols that started in waters near Taiwan.

Defence Minister Richard Marles says the inaugural patrols represent the practical implementation of the strategic partnership signed between the two nations in September.

In a joint statement with the Philippines' National Defence Secretary Gilberto C Teodoro Jnr, Mr Marles said Australia and the Philippines are firmly committed to a peaceful, secure and prosperous region, and that the first maritime cooperative activity between the Australian Defence Force and Armed Forces of the Philippines demonstrates this important commitment.

Disaster recovery assistance has been approved for those whose properties and businesses have been impacted by a large bushfire north of Perth.

More than 200 firefighters continue to fight a fire which has ripped through dozens of tinder-dry, semi-rural properties, destroying 18 homes.

It's expected to reach 39 degrees over the weekend in Western Australia, with authorities warning it will take another three to four days to bring the fire under control.

Residents are being warned there is still a possible threat to lives and homes as the fire continues to burn and the weather forecast remains unpredictable.

Premier Roger Cook says people can access support online now.

"These payments will be in addition to the government's core emergency relief arrangements, and they are available to help for the purchase of food and other essential items, emergency transport or temporary accommodation. Information and applications for these payments are now live on the Department of Fire and Emergency Services website."

And in football,

Wellington have impressed with a stellar start to the A-League Men season with a 1 nil win against Melbourne City.

Bulgarian-born midfielder Bozhidar Kraev's tap-in early in the second half of Saturday's clash ensured the Phoenix remain undefeated.

City are in early strife with just one win, a draw and three losses after Socceroos striker Jamie Maclaren had a penalty saved at Mt Smart Stadium in Auckland.

City came within centimetres of equalising when a Leo Natel left-footer from close range in the 57th minute was cleared off the goal line.

The Melbourne side's Hamza Sakhi then was denied by Paulsen some five minutes before the break, setting the stage for Wellington's last-half heroics.
