Prime Minister Anthony Albanese is joining United States President Donald Trump and a chorus of international leaders in Malaysia and Singapore as summit season swings through Asia.
The Prime Minister is arriving in the capital, Kuala Lumpur, today for the annual Association of Southeast Asian Nations summit and will then travel to South Korea for the APEC Economic leaders meeting next week.
US President Donald Trump will also attend both events, but just how long he stays and whether there’s any chance for another Albanese encounter remains up in the air.
Susannah Patton, Director of the Southeast Asia Program at the Lowy Institute, says Mr Albanese is advocating for closer links between the US and Southeast Asia.
"So, I think Australia very much wants to see the US play a strong role in ASEAN and prime minister Albanese has already welcomed the fact that the US president is attending which hasn't necessarily been the case over the previous Trump presidency or the Biden presidency so Australia really wants to see the US engaged with Asia engaged with Southeast Asia and we'll be encouraging that.”

Israel has conducted air strikes in central Gaza, in another breach of the US brokered ceasefire with Hamas, with hospitals in Gaza reporting at least four people were injured.
The Israeli military says it was targeting an alleged Islamic Jihad militant in Gaza, vowing to continue its military campaign.
Elsewhere, Gaza's Health Ministry reports five children in the territory were wounded by unexploded ordnance over the past week, including twins who thought one was a toy.
British emergency physician and paediatrician Dr Harriet gave an update from Shifa Hospital.
"We received two paediatric patients, two children this morning who were the victims of an unexploded missile exploding. They came in with severe injuries and they're both critically unwell and this is one of many cases that we've seen where even though the bombs dropping from the sky have slowed down, they haven't stopped, they've slowed down, there are still many unexploded missiles in the rubble, in the remains of people's homes."

A three-year-old boy has died in a Queensland police station after a crash south of Brisbane on Saturday morning.
Emergency services were called to Burnside Road at Ormeau just before 5am following reports of a crash.
Police said initial inquiries indicated a witness had helped a 22-year-old woman and a child who were also in the vehicle, and transported them to the Beenleigh Police Station.
Police said in a statement that a short time later, the three-year-old child became unresponsive in the foyer of the station with the boy dying despite efforts by officers to perform CPR.
Detective Acting Superintendent Mark Mooney says they believe the 24-year-old male was driving the vehicle, and he has been charged for breaching a domestic violence order.
"The male has been charged today for breaching the domestic violence order, and will appear in court on Monday. Further enquiries and investigations are continuing into any other serious crimes that may be alleged, and work out exactly what caused the three-year-old's death."

India's star players Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma have led the team to a nine-wicket victory over Australia in the third one-day international at Sydney cricket ground.
Sharma scored 121 and Kohli, 74, but Australia still clinched a 2-1 series win, after notching victories in the series' first two matches.
Meanwhile, Australia has beaten South Africa by two wickets overnight, at the Women’s World Cup in India.
The win means the team will take on England at the tournament's semi-finals.
Leg spinner Alana King's 17-8 is the best bowling score in women's world cup history, and best performance by an Australian in a women's one day international.
Captain Tahlia McGrath praised her teammate's record-breaking turn.
" Nah that was pretty awesome, it just felt like, get the ball in her hands and something was going to happen and that was what certainly what happened today. She was relentless, attacked those stumps and we felt like every ball was going to be a wicket. So super happy for her."
