Israel says air strikes in Lebanon may pave the way for a ground invasion.

A report by consumer group Choice finds Aldi has the cheapest groceries.

Former France and Real Madrid centre-back Raphael Varaneannounces his retirement.

Israel's military chief Herzi Halevi says air strikes in Lebanon are preparing the way for a possible ground operation in the country.

Israeli forces continue with strikes that they say are designed to destroy Hezbollah's infrastructure.

The Lebanese government says just over 50 people have died yesterday and more than 200 were injured pushing the death toll from this week's strikes in Lebanon past 600.

Lebanon's Health Minister, Firass Al-Abaid, says the number of people displaced in the country of five and half million people numbers in the hundreds of thousands.

"There are statistics on the shelters, the numbers are possibly close to 40,000 or a little bit more, however what we need to know is that there are many displaced who didn't go to shelters, some people went to their relatives, some people rented houses - so we estimate that for sure the number of people who are displaced is in the hundreds of thousands but how many, this information will come from the interior ministry and from the emergency operations room in the prime ministry."

Meanwhile, Iranian-backed Hezbollah claims to have targeted the headquarters of the Israeli spy agency Mossad near Tel Aviv with what it describes as a ballistic missile.

Meanwhile Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei says killing Hezbollah commanders will not bring the group to its knees.

Khamenei told military officials that Israel's attacks will not cripple Hezbollah.

"This victory belongs to Hezbollah and the resistance forces so far. The reason is the killing of people. If the Zionist regime had been able to defeat the militant forces in Gaza or Lebanon or the West Bank, it would not have needed to show its ugly face in the world and commit these crimes against homes, hospitals, schools, women and children."

The family of a 33-year-old Noongar man is demanding answers after he was placed into an induced coma after suffering a suspected drug overdose in a WA prison.

The man has been in a coma for nine days and is shackled to his bed at Rockingham Hospital in Perth.

He was reportedly serving a sentence for burglary in the Albany regional prison in the south-west of the state.

The man's uncle, Mervyn Eades, says they only found out he'd been placed in a coma when they visited the hospital.

"As far as a notification from the Albany Regional Prison, there was none whatsoever. Never touching base. After the fact, they ring and apologise and all this and that but it was not worth a telephone call. We should have known as soon as he left the hospital - as soon as he left the prison in the ambulance, family should have been notified straight away."

A new report by consumer group Choice has found that supermarket chain Aldi has the cheapest groceries.

Woolworths came in second place followed by Coles and IGA.

It's the second report to find that Aldi is cheaper than its rivals.

The average price for a basket of groceries at Aldi was nearly $51 dollars, while a similiar basket from IGA cost nearly $79 dollars with specials.

As part of the research, Choice sent mystery shoppers to more 100 regional and metropolitan supermarkets across the country to record prices for common grocery items.

Assistant Minister for Competition Andrew Leigh says the report is intended to help consumers feeling the pinch from the high cost of living.

In football...

France's World Cup-winning footballer, Raphael Varane has retired from playing.

The 31-year-old former Manchester United, Real Madrid and France defender says it takes a big dose of courage to listen to his heart and his instinct.

In an Instagram post, he says he has fallen and risen a thousand times, and this time it is the moment to stop and hang his boots up.

Mr Varane has won three La Liga titles and four Champions League trophies before he signed for the Premier League side with Manchester United in 2021.

He moved to Como in July but injured his knee on his debut against Sampdoria last month.
