Australia and Japan have struck a new agreement to deepen security and economic ties.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Japan’s Sanae Takaichi announced the deal after talks in Canberra.

It covers defence, energy, critical minerals and economic security.

Mr Albanese says the partnership is delivering real benefits for both countries.

"While geography places our countries on the far north and the far south of the Indo-Pacific, it is thanks to the determination of our countries that we have been closer. That closeness has led to a series of new agreements reached today. These agreements are to the benefit of both of our people."

The agreement marks 50 years since Australia and Japan signed their treaty of friendship and cooperation.

A tanker has reportedly been hit by unknown projectiles in the Strait of Hormuz, as tensions in the region escalate.

The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations agency says all crew are safe after the incident north of Fujairah in the United Arab Emirates.

The attack comes shortly after President Donald Trump announced the United States would begin helping ships stranded in the waterway.

He says the operation is a “humanitarian gesture” to assist vessels and crews running low on food and supplies.

The International Maritime Organization says hundreds of ships and as many as 20-thousand seafarers have been unable to transit the strait during the conflict.

Iran's Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmail Baghaei says the US response to Iran’s proposal to end the war has been conveyed to Pakistan.

In a phone interview on state TV IRJB News, Mr Baghaei said that the plan is based on first drafting an understanding to end the war, and then discussing how to implement it over a 30-day period.

"Our plan is focused exclusively on ending the war. The points mentioned about details in the nuclear field are absolutely not included in this plan."

US President Donald Trump had earlier said he was reviewing the proposal, citing doubts it wouldn't come to fruition.

In a social media post he said "they have not yet paid a big enough price for what they have done", referring to the nearly 50 years [[47 years]] since the Islamic Revolution* in Iran.

The daughter of a Bondi terror attack victim has recounted her experience of being abused for being Jewish while in a shopping centre with her baby.

Sheina Gutnick's 62-year-old father Reuven Morrison was killed after hurling a brick at one of the gunmen involved in the December 14 attack that left 15 people dead.

She appeared as the first witness in public hearings for the Royal Commission on antisemitism and social cohesion that began today [[4 May]].

Ms Gutnick says she hopes her testimony goes some way to finding solutions, so members of the Jewish community can feel safe.

"And if the public can understand what it is that we have been facing on a daily basis, the calculations that we need to make as parents of: do we take our children to an exhibit in a museum where we will be most likely faced with antisemitic tropes that we will have to explain to our children that someone doesn't like you simply for the reason that you are Jewish."

Shadow Treasurer Tim Wilson says Labor has lost control of the economy amid speculations of possible changes to capital gains, negative gearing and increased tax on family trusts.

Despite ruling out changes to negative gearing ahead of the last election, Treasurer Jim Chalmers says the budget will focus on intergenerational pressures.

Delivering a budget preview, Dr Chalmers insists the government must adjust their priorities based on current pressures.

Tim Wilson says after breaking promises regarding stage three tax cuts, the government is now planning what he calls a "tax agenda assault on families".

"Jim Chalmers is now actively telling us he needs to break trust, to build trust so that he can target trusts. The economic follow through is real. Last financial year, eight businesses collapsed every business hour. It is clear the treasurer has lost control of the economy policy is heading in the in one direction, the Reserve Bank in the other, and Australians are being caught in between."

A community parade has gone ahead in Alice Springs, as the town continues to grieve the death of a young girl.

The annual Bangtail Muster began with a minute’s silence, and many in the crowd wore pink in tribute to Kumanjayi Little Baby.

Locals say the town is supporting the family, while also trying to come together after a painful week.

"Absolutely, look everyone is supporting that family as best we can and everybody in Alice springs is feeling it this week, definately."

"It is lovely seeing Alice springs doing what we normally do, and that's coming together and being happy, we've just survived that week which was a really hard week but it was lovely people did come together, and today we're thinking happy thoughts,"
