Acting Prime Minister Richard Marles says the federal government has established a taskforce to investigate the Medicare portal hack.
He reassures the nation, saying although the government is taking the issue seriously, the impact of the breach is minor.
Mr Marles says they will investigate if laws were broken in respect to the incident.
"This will be a task force that will be rapid; it will look at this incident thoroughly, but it will also examine our ... respect of emerging AI cyberthreats, it will look at the security of government networks, it will look at the legal arrangements that we have in place in respect of an incident of this kind."
Just this week, Australia joined a global push with more than 20 other world leaders for better AI safety regulations, alongside the CEOs of major tech companies.

OpenAI says it has conducted an extensive review after its AI agent breached Australia's Medicare system.
The company says during the review, activity involving several Australian government websites and services were compromised.
In a statement, an OpenAI spokesperson said its models attempted to look up answers and available statistics for questions about Australia during an internal evaluation.

The federal government has announced another $10 million to help protect humanitarian workers in conflict zones.
The funding comes as an Australian-led declaration protecting aid workers reaches 130 countries, more than two-thirds of United Nations member states.
The money will support security training, better data collection and legal and financial assistance for victims and their families.
Australia launched the initiative in honour of Australian aid worker Zomi Frankcom, who was killed in Gaza in 2024.

US President Donald Trump has personally welcomed Chinese President Xi Jinping to Washington, kicking off a three-day state visit.
Mr Trump greeted Mr Xi on the tarmac in a rare show of ceremony, as the two countries try to manage tensions over trade, technology and security.
The United States and China remain locked in a fierce race over artificial intelligence and advanced computer chips.
Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer says America's technological edge is at stake.
"Well today as Trump wines and dines President Xi [Jinping] at the White House, he has a choice to make. That's why today we are calling on Trump to stand up for the nation's security by once and for all blocking China's access to our AI chips and manufacturing equipment."

The United States and Iran have held their first talks in months, as efforts continue to end their nearly seven-month war.
The discussions took place in New York during the United Nations General Assembly, where tensions were also on display when a US delegate walked out during a speech by Iran's president.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio says the talks were positive, but there was no major breakthrough.
“It was positive in that regard. But ultimately, I don't want to mischaracterise this as a major breakthrough, but at the same time, I think it was significant that at least there was a conversation.”
Washington says any long-term deal must prevent Iran from developing a nuclear weapon, while Tehran says it remains open to diplomacy.

Hundreds of Qantas workers in Adelaide, Brisbane, Perth and Sydney have walked off the job in a 24-hour strike over pay and working conditions.
The Transport Workers Union says about 400 safety screeners at Sydney Airport have also staged two two-hour stoppages this morning, with another three-hour strike planned for Monday.
The union is pushing for higher wages, more full-time jobs, increased staffing hours and for workers to be brought back under one Qantas banner.
Qantas and the union remain in negotiations, with passengers being urged to allow extra time for travel during the industrial action.

In sport, Brisbane star Lachie Neale will make a final bid this afternoon to overturn a one-match ban threatening to rule him out of Saturday's AFL Grand Final.
The Lions are taking the case to the AFL Appeals Board after Neale was found guilty of striking Hawthorn's Jack Ginnivan in last weekend's preliminary final.
Channel Nine AFL commentator Eddie McGuire says Neale's clean disciplinary record could be crucial.
"This is a man who's played over 320 games without being suspended. He has won the Brownlow Medal on two occasions for the fairest and best player in the competition and has placed in two other times. So that is probably where they have to go, but they do have to find a legal loophole here to see whether this suspension for one match, which is the grand final, is deemed to be manifestly unjust."
