A Pakistani foreign affairs analyst says Iran may have emerged from negotiations with the United States in a stronger position than many expected.

The comments come after President Donald Trump signed an initial agreement with Iran that includes sanctions relief and a framework for talks on Tehran's nuclear program.

Huma Baqai from the Millennium Institute of Technology and Entrepreneurship she says the conflict was unnecessary and believes the resulting deal is likely to endure.

"President Trump succumbed to the pressure and entered this absolutely unnecessary war. Benjamin Netanyahu was always obsessed with this idea to attack Iran. ... I think Iran had a weak hand but it played its cards well and the deal will hold because for now alternatives are less attractive."

Dr Baqai says Iran has gained leverage in negotiations over sanctions relief, frozen assets and the future of the Strait of Hormuz.

.

The new agreement between the United States and Iran is facing criticism from both sides of politics in Washington.

Politicians have raised concerns about the release of billions of dollars to Tehran and what it could mean for regional security.

Critics say the deal could strengthen Iran’s influence in the Middle East, while doing little to curb its military capabilities.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer says the agreement gives away too much and hands Tehran money that should be spent at home.

"Americans got almost nothing we wanted and needed, and Trump gave away the store. The Iranians took him to the cleaners. Look what they're getting. They got more control of the Strait of Hormuz. They're getting a $300 million payoff which we Democrats are not going to vote. No one should vote for it. This money should be used at home where it's needed to reduce people's costs."

It is not clear from the agreement whether the United States will contribute to reparations funding for Iran.

British Labour politician Andy Burnham has won the Makerfield by-election, intensifying pressure on Prime Minister Keir Starmer.

Mr Burnham’s victory returns him to parliament and strengthens speculation about a future leadership challenge.

The result is being seen as a significant moment for Labour as the party grapples with internal divisions and falling support.

In his victory speech, Mr Burnham says the result offers an opportunity for political change.

"We must get it right, there will be no second chance but it is a chance now from this result tonight to build a new politics based on unity and hope turning the way from the path that takes us to a divided dark politics of the kind we see in the United States. "

A third man has been charged over the firebombing of a Melbourne synagogue that sparked international outrage.

Police allege the 20-year-old was one of three men involved in the arson attack on Adass Israel Synagogue in December 2024.

Two worshippers were inside preparing for morning prayers when the fire tore through the building, forcing them to flee.

Counter-terrorism police say the investigation remains ongoing, with further arrests possible.

The Socceroos are out to make it two from two when they face co-hosts the United States tomorrow.

Australia opened with a two-nil win over the Türkiye national football team, while the Americans beat Paraguay four-one.

The match will be played in Seattle, with the US expected to have strong home support.

Coach Tony Popovic says his side will need to lift again to get the result it wants.

"Different challenge different teams. Türkiye were more European style in terms of their technical buildup, slower buildup fantastic possession I think the US team has a good mix of the two, very powerful very athletic so we know it will be a be a very different type of challenge playing the host nation is a wonderful challenge but also a wonderful opportunity for us and we know that we will need to be better than we were against Türkiye to get the result we want."
