Police have begun charging protesters after a night of unrest in Alice Springs, triggered by the arrest of a man accused of the death of five year old Kumanjayi Little Baby.

NT Police Commissioner Martin Dole has confirmed one person has been arrested and more charges are expected, after an angry crowd attacked the 47 year old and then tried to storm the hospital he was taken to.

Takeaway alcohol has also been banned in Alice Springs today and sales will be limited on Saturday, though the Commissioner has said the violence did not represent the broader community response.

Northern Territory Chief Minister Lia Finocchiaro has backed the police's actions.

"We saw police, firies, and ambulances attacked. Now attacks on frontline workers are never acceptable. And whilst we appreciate and understand that people are angry and grieving, there is never an excuse or an acceptability of violence as a response."

The Prime Minister has defended the government's plan for housing tax changes, widely believed to have been included in the budget to be unveiled in just under two weeks' time.

Media reports have ramped up expectations the 50 per cent capital gains discount will be reverted to what was in place before 1999.

Treasurer Jim Chalmers' comments have also appeared to suggest arrangements for existing asset holders will be grandfathered.

Anthony Albanese has told an event in Western Sydney that any changes would be designed to help young people aspire to own a home.

"I know there's been a bit of speculation - all of it wrong. When people see what we're actually going to do in the budget, people will be able to make their own assessments. But I can assure you that it is aimed firmly and squarely at aspiration."

Top US military leaders are briefing US President Donald Trump on potential action against Iran.

Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, General Dan Caine; the head of Central Command Admiral Brad Cooper; and US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth are mulling potential military strikes designed to compel Iran to negotiate an end to the conflict.

The Trump administration is also in discussions with oil companies and contemplating measures to boost oil production in the United States soon.

White House economic adviser Kevin Hassett says this is intended to mitigate the impact of the conflict on energy supplies.

"There are things - regulations that are holding up, like how quickly stuff could come through mines or wells, and we're studying how we can change those... We used federal authority to get - like the Californians had shut down an actually operating offshore well, and we've opened that up using federal authority, and it's producing oil today."

The crew of the Artemis II mission have appeared at a United Nations roundtable, weeks after completing their historic 10 day space flight that captured glimpses of the lunar far side.

The event has been hosted by US Ambassador to the UN Mike Waltz at the United Nations headquarters in New York.

Pilot Victor Glover, Commander Reid Wiseman, Christina Koch and Canada’s Jeremy Hansen each spoke of the feelings that they experienced seeing the Earth from their spacecraft.

And there was a lighter moment as the Artemis II pilot celebrated a milestone birthday.

MIKE WALTZ: "Today is Victor Glover's 50th birthday. So I'm really gonna embarrass the hell out of him. Will you join me in a birthday song to Victor?"

Happy birthday to you. Happy birthday to you. Happy birthday (UPSOUND: audience singing)."

To sport and in rugby league news,

Canberra coach Ricky Stuart has thrown his support behind Craig Bellamy after the Melbourne coach's diagnosis with an unspecified neurological degenerative condition.

Stuart and Bellamy are two of the NRL's closest coaches, having played for the Raiders in the late 1980s and early 1990s, including the 1990 grand final win over Penrith.

Bellamy will remain as the Storm coach for the immediate future.

Ricky says his friend is getting good advice - and has good people around him.
