A 15-person Australian Disaster Assistance Response team is set to arrive in Kathmandu to help with search and rescue efforts, after the catastrophic floods along the Nepal-Tibet border.
It comes as the number of Australians unaccounted for has been revised down to 36 from 38, after two more Australian citizens were confirmed safe.
The Nepali government says more than 1200 people have died and more than 5,000 people are missing in Nepal, and the Chinese government says 21 people have died and more than 500 are are missing in China.
Brazilian man Leonardo Garlet Caetano has shared his experience of surviving the floods with SBS Portuguese.
"It was really intense, the scenes, and, mainly, I'd say what makes it most tense is that situation of them waiting for a second wave or more water to come at any moment. So, also because of that, the army is protecting that region."
The H5 bird flu has reached Sydney, with a case confirmed in a bird on Sydney's northern beaches. The New South Wales government says the deadly strain has been detected in a greater crested tern found in Warriewood.
The Department of Agriculture says there's now been a total of 468 detections of bird flu in Australian wildlife.
Mayor of the Northern Beaches Sue Heins says she expects it may be the firs of many, and is bracing for potentially devastating impacts.
Tributes are coming from around the globe for feminist icon Gloria Steinem, who has died aged 92.
The American activist first gained prominence as a journalist and went on to write for New York magazine.
Mourners are leaving flowers and cards outside her New York home, including local resident Debbie Goldberg, who shared a story of Steinem's influence on her own life.
"30 years ago or more, would have been 50 years ago, my husband said, what you're going through is just the stage of woman's lib thing. Actually, no, it was my mother calling my husband saying, I'm concerned about your girlfriend, she's going towards the women's liberation, and he said it's just a stage, and I said to her, waiting outside the movie theater, it wasn't a stage. I'm still there. We still need to be there, unfortunately, but she was definitely one of the most influential people for women's rights."
The contributions of women in Australian science has been spotlighted at this year's Eureka Prizes.
Eleven Eureka Prizes have been awarded to women or teams made up of predominantly women, recognising their excellence in their scientific fields.
Dr Jane Tiller has won the Emerging Leader prize for her campaign that led to Australian life insurers being banned from using genetic test results.
Australian tennis player Nick Kyrgios has entered a treatment program after accepting a one month suspension for testing positive to cocaine.
Kyrgios had been provisionally suspended since August 4, and was facing a ban ranging from 3-months to up to four years, after failing a drugs test at a tournament in Spain in June.
During an interview with International Tennis Integrity Agency investigators Kyrgios explained his use of cocaine had occurred socially during a night out.
The ITIA has accepted his drug use was outside of the competition, and says his suspension ends next week, subject to completion of the treatment program.
