SBS World News Radio: The commander of the New South Wales Police Armoury has defended the choice of weapons and ammunition used by tactical officers to storm Sydney's Lindt cafe.

Speaking at the inquest, Chief Inspector Richard Steinborn rejected claims they were unsafe and risked the lives of innocent hostages by colliding with walls and fragmenting.

Hostages Katrina Dawson and Tori Johnson were killed when gunman Man Haron Monis stormed the Lindt cafe in Sydney in 2014.

The gunman was also killed.
