The President of Poland is visiting Australia for five days to discuss security, energy and progress on an Australia-European Union free trade agreement with Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull.

Andrzej Duda and his wife Agata Kornhauser-Duda are in the country until Tuesday and will travel to Melbourne, Canberra and Sydney.

Malcolm Turnbull said Poland was an important member of the European Union, sharing Australia's values on international security and open trade.

"President Duda's visit will be an opportunity to discuss issues of mutual interest, including progress on a comprehensive and ambitious Australia-EU free trade agreement and expanding bilateral trade links," Mr Turnbull said in a statement on Friday.

More than 180,000 Australians have Polish ancestry.
