A heavily pregnant woman has cuts and abrasions after a thief dragged her down a concrete walkway in a bag-snatch in Sydney's southwest.

The 23-year-old woman, who is nine months' pregnant, was walking from Canley Vale Railway Station to meet her husband on Monday at 5pm when a man grabbed her handbag.

The thief ran off but a passer-by waiting at the station chased him before losing him when he cut through backyards.

Police say the thief was in his 20s, with a medium build and short brown hair, wearing a grey tracksuit top with blue stripes and dark-coloured track pants.

The pregnant woman was taken to the birthing unit at Liverpool Hospital for observation but has since been released.
