SBS journalist Laura Murphy-Oates has received three Walkley Award honours in Australia’s most prestigious journalism awards.

Ms Murphy-Oates, 27, has won the 2018 Young Journalist of the Year and the Young Journalist Awards for Public Service Journalism and Longform Feature or Special.
The journalist and television presenter for The Feed was awarded for her features ‘Kids of Kalgoorlie’, ‘Young and Black’ and ‘Vanished: Canada’s missing women’.

Her work has been featured on The Feed, Dateline and SBS TV.

“Laura’s body of work was outstanding. We couldn’t look away,” the judging board said.
“That [Laura Murphy-Oates] was a winner in two categories also speaks to the high quality of her work, the depth of her reporting [and] her ability to draw insights from interviewees,” The Walkley Advisory Board added.

Ms Murphy-Oates was humbled by the honour, saying her past work on SBS’s NITV had bettered her as a journalist.

“I am incredibly lucky at 27 to have spent the past six years travelling around Australia and the world meeting First Nations people. It has made me a better journalist and a better person,” she said.
