Centre Alliance MP Rebekha Sharkie says she's "incredibly humbled" to have been officially returned as the member for Mayo at the declaration of the poll following Saturday's by-election.

Speaking at the Australian Electoral Commission offices in Adelaide on Wednesday, Ms Sharkie said she was delighted to be getting back to work.

"There is no great privilege, there is no great honour than to represent your community," she said.

Ms Sharkie finished with just under 58 per cent of the two-party preferred vote after Saturday's poll compared to 42 per cent for Liberal candidate Georgina Downer.

She first won the South Australian seat at the 2016 federal election but was forced to resign earlier this year when she was caught up in the dual citizenship saga.

On Saturday she lifted her primary vote by almost 10 per cent and when preferences were distributed finished more than 13,000 votes in front.

Ms Downer also attended Wednesday's poll declaration and congratulated Ms Sharkie on her victory and thanked the commission staff for their work.

"Being here you really appreciate the power of Australian democracy," she said.

Ms Downer has already indicated she will again seek Liberal preselection for Mayo to run at next year's federal poll.
