Sliced mushrooms recalled over plastic fears

Sliced mushroom punnets available at several Australian supermarkets have been recalled because they may contain large pieces of white plastic.

Costa Group, the country's largest grower, pre-packer and marketer of fresh mushrooms, has recalled the 200g, 375g and 500g punnets of brown and white sliced mushrooms with a 'best before' date of July 19.

In a statement, Costa Group, said the recall was prompted by the discovery of damaged plastic rollers on an assembly line at its Melbourne production facility.

"As soon as the issue was detected, even though there were no reported incidents, Costa advised food safety authorities of the intention to conduct a recall, and retailers were notified to withdraw the product from sale," the statement said.

The recalled product is available in Coles, Woolworths, ALDI and independent supermarkets in Victoria, NSW, Queensland and the ACT.

It's sold under several brands including Woolworths, Coles, Karidale and Costa Mushrooms.

There is a potential hazard if plastic pieces are swallowed, Costa said, urging customers to return the product to the store of purchase for a full refund.

Earlier this week, Food Standards Australia and New Zealand (FSANZ) issued a recall for a number of frozen vegetable products sold at Aldi, Woolworths and IGA because of contamination concerns involving listeria bacteria.
