Indigenous food flavours are continuing to impress international markets. Byron Bay based Brookfarm is now selling their ‘Davidson Plum’ granola in China.
The macadamia grower provides nuts for a range of healthy mueslis, exported to more than 12 countries.
Small Business Secrets first met the owner and operator of Brookfarm, the Brook family, earlier this year, at their property in the Byron Bay Hinterland.
30 years ago, the family bought a rundown dairy farm in the Byron Bay hinterland and began planting nut trees.
The rich, red volcanic soils, high rainfall and warm sub-tropical climate of the Byron Bay hinterland provided ideal conditions for growing macadamias.
By 2000 they sold their very first products, a brand of premium muesli packed with macadamias from their farm.
The family has added a new flavour to their muesli range - Wild Berry Granola featuring the ‘Davidson Plum.’
The plant is a native rainforest superfood that grows in the region surrounding their macadamia orchard.
The plum flavoured granola has been well received in China, helping to grow new markets for Australian Indigenous food products.
The Brook family are also using the Davidson Plum to infuse gin at their other business, the Cape Byron Distillery.
Both their Dry gin and Sloe Gin recently collected Gold Medals at the San Francisco World Spirit Competition.
The family’s dry gin contains 26 botanicals, of which 18 are native to their region of the NSW Northern Rivers.
